Emergency Flooding Services

Interstate Engineering provided technical support and emergency staffing for flooding in the James River and Pipestem Creek drainage basins during a flooding event in 2009.  Working closely with City officials and Corps of Engineers, Interstate Engineering provided the following services:


  • reviewing and updating maps of protective measures
  • mapping the protective measures for expected releases
  • surveying to verify existing river bank elevations
  • preparing estimates of equipment, sandbags, and materials needed
  • assistance with identifying and coordinating with land owners affected by emergency measures
  • street assessments to determine the impact of emergency construction equipment on haul roads
  • assistance with the preparation of evacuation plans for projected releases
  • preparing and attending numerous meetings to communicate the City’s response to the emergency.
