Landfill Rubble Pit Construction

In May of 2011, Interstate Engineering began a contract with the City of Pierre to design a new rubble pit at the Pierre Regional Landfill. Funding for the project was provided through the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The project involved the excavation of over 54,000 cubic yards, with more than 14,000 cubic yards hauled to be used as cover for the active cells at the landfill. The rubble pit has a capacity of 58,650 cubic yards which will last a minimum of five years until additional municipal solid waste cells are constructed and the rubble pit is extended.
