Rubble Pit Closure
Interstate Engineering provided design and construction engineering services for the closure of the City of Pierre’s rubble landfill site. The rubble site, composed primarily of construction debris, had been on fire and smoldering for some time. The fire department was called to the site on occasion to extinguish the flames, but due to continued flare ups, alternative actions were needed to solve the problem.
Working with the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), it was determined that the only way to completely stop the burning and smoldering of the debris was to close the site by capping the rubble with a three-foot layer of clay. Interstate Engineering provided a survey of the rubble site and the proposed borrow area and designed an interim cover to establish the minimum three feet of fill required and to establish quantities. Final closure of the capped site was completed in 2012.
